For over a decade, the sociologist Reginald Bibby has been encouraging churches to make better use of the self-declared connection Canadians have for certain families of churches, and to think of these affiliates as "people who belong but attend less frequently". Making the Connection builds on Bibby's insights and further work done by Richard Bott. It offers facilitated programs which enable congregations to experience the challenge and energy that is released when they intentionally take steps to reconnect with people who have drifted "out of sight". The program is designed to engage the whole congregation.
Reports of the first pilot projects facilitated by Mardi Tindall and Ron Ewart are now available on request.
Moderator Mardi Tindall enthusiastically writes: "The promise of this program lies in the authenticity of the relationships that are created, not in its effectiveness as a 'quick fix' marketing tool. It is one way for congregations to recommit to being communities that are not only welcoming, but deeply hospitable. The program seeks to help congregations demonstrate real interest in the lives of others beyond themselves and to become willing and able to 'go out' and meet people where they are."
