Since 2004, the sociologist Reginald Bibby has been encouraging churches to make better use of the self-declared connection Canadians have for certain families of churches, and to think of these 'affiliates' as 'people who belong but attend less frequently'. Making the Connection builds on Bibby's insights and further work done by Richard Bott, to offer a facilitated program that allows congregations to experience the challenge and energy that is released when they intentionally take steps to reconnect with people who have drifted 'out of sight'. The program is designed to engage the whole congregation.
A report of the first pilot project 2007 facilitated by Mardi Tindall and Ron Ewart is now available. Further information about additional pilots in 2009 are forthcoming.
"The promise of this program lies in the authenticity of the relationships that are created, not in its effectiveness as a 'quick fix' marketing tool. It is one way for congregations to recommit to being communities that are not only welcoming, but deeply hospitable. The program seeks to help congregations demonstrate real interest in the lives of others beyond themselves and to become a people willing to 'go out' and meet people where they are." (Mardi Tindall)
